From My Personal Desk, Fourth Edition
Your identity is a living, dynamic mosaic. At your essence, you are a soul, integrated with your Mind, Operating body, Spirit, Aligned divine, Identity, and Community. Each part of this mosaic carries its own color, shape, and energy, contributing to the wholeness of who you are.
When leaders bring this mosaic into alignment, they stop fighting against themselves and begin channeling their full creative power into their signature work. Consider a CEO who has built a successful company but feels a sense of incompletion. By recognizing the disconnected parts of her inner mosaic, her neglected creativity, her need for meaningful connection, and her spiritual alignment, she begins to harmonize them.
The result is remarkable. Innovative strategies emerge with ease, her team feels inspired, and her leadership extends far beyond profit, creating ripples that influence culture, community, and future generations.
As Brené Brown reminds us, “Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are.” And Daniel Goleman adds, “True leadership arises from the integration of emotional, social, and cognitive intelligence into a whole, coherent self.” Both point us toward the same truth: leadership excellence flows not from fragmentation, but from wholeness.
Neuroscience reinforces this wisdom. Research shows that when the prefrontal cortex, our center for decision-making, syncs with the heart and gut, leaders experience sharper clarity, expanded creativity, and greater resilience. Spiritual practices, mindfulness, and somatic awareness help regulate the nervous system, promoting alignment between inner states and outward action. When the nervous system feels safe and grounded, creativity flows, relationships deepen, and purpose becomes tangible.
Studies from the HeartMath Institute further reveal that cultivating heart-brain coherence through intentional breathing enhances focus, reduces stress, and strengthens decision-making. Polyvagal research shows that a regulated nervous system opens the door to trust, connection, and adaptive leadership, all essential qualities for those building a lasting legacy.
At the heart of this journey is the crucial distinction that the significance of the soul is far different than the significance of the ego. Ego-driven significance is bound to external validation, titles, and achievements. Soul-driven significance, however, arises from alignment with our deeper essence, from the contributions that outlast recognition and touch humanity. This form of significance is cultivated by expanding our perception of who we are, or who we think we are, and using that awareness to step into possibilities far greater than what we once imagined.
Ancient wisdom echoes this, reminding us that true significance flows not from achievement, but from alignment with the divine. In stillness, reflection, or prayer, the ego’s striving falls quiet, allowing space for the voice of the soul, the truest guide of legacy identity.
To bridge the gap from success to significance, leaders must learn to embody this expanded perception. The journey unfolds through four key shifts:
1. Reset – Stop reacting to circumstances and start observing yourself with curiosity.
Shift from being reactive to reflective. Take 15 minutes to journal one belief about yourself that limits your potential and reframe it as a source of power. Reflect – What story about myself am I holding that no longer serves me? How would I act if I believed my soul’s significance mattered more than my ego’s? Which emotional patterns do I notice recurring when I feel limited or stuck?
2. Rise – Move beyond productivity; step into vision-driven action.
Shift from a focus on productivity to vision. Identify one area where you’ve been “playing small” and outline a small, bold action that aligns with your higher purpose. Reflect – What contribution can I make today that is bigger than my current role or title? Which of my talents are underutilized and waiting for activation? How can I create space in my schedule for work that aligns with my soul’s significance?
3. Reign – Make decisions based on your integrated self, not the ego’s need for control or approval of others.
Shift from seeking approval to standing in inner authority. Practice making one decision solely from your integrated self, considering mind, body, heart, and values, without seeking approval. Reflect – Which decisions in my life have been ego-driven rather than soul-driven? How does it feel to act from alignment with my values instead of pleasing others? What is one boundary I need to set today to honor my inner authority?
4. Regenerate – Replenish yourself to sustain impact, fostering creativity, energy, and inspiration for others.
Shift from living on transactions to renewal. Schedule one restorative practice, movement, meditation, or reflection, that replenishes your energy and strengthens your nervous system. Reflect – What activity makes me feel fully alive and connected to my soul? How am I nurturing my physical, emotional, and spiritual energy to lead at my highest capacity? Which relationships or experiences can I cultivate to amplify my sense of meaning and purpose?
